Porcelain Veneers FAQ
Are porcelain veneers permanent?
Yes, veneers are considered an irreversible procedure. This is because the doctor will need to shave a millimeter off your natural teeth to allow for the thickness of the veneer. The veneers are then bonded to your natural teeth, which is a permanent procedure.
Am I a good candidate for veneers?
Porcelain veneers are a good choice if you want to achieve your dream smile without any complex orthodontics work involved. You may also be interested in veneers if you have stained or chipped teeth, as the veneers will cover up your existing teeth.
How many veneers will I need?
A consultation is required to determine whether veneers are the best choice for you and how many veneers are required. For the best aesthetic results, an even number of veneers is typically recommended.
How long do dental veneers last?
Veneers typically last approximately 5 to 10 years, but they can last much longer with proper care. To care for your veneers properly, it's important to brush your teeth twice a day, floss every day, and have professional cleanings every six months and yearly check-ups with your dentist.
Does the process of getting veneers hurt?
Patients are typically numb for the veneering process, which means that there should be no pain at all. You may expect some soreness of the gums after the numbness subsides. Your doctor will recommend you over the counter medications to alleviate the soreness. If your case involves eight or more veneers, you may also experience some soreness of the gums, but this can also be alleviated with over the counter medications.
What happens if a veneer comes off?
This can sometimes happen, although it's very rare. If one of your veneers comes off, try not to panic and save the veneer if possible. Avoid using any kind of glue to put it back on and call our office straight away. Keep in mind that your tooth may be sensitive to cold liquids or food when the veneer is off.
